New Caroline Creek Hutt, Waiau River Valley
A generous anonymous donation provided for a new 10 bunk Department of Conservation hut to replace the existing two person bivvy within the St James Conservation Area, near Lake Tennyson. The hut is location 17km from the road and approximately 10km from the St James Cycle trail.
KGA undertook a geotechnical assessment for the Department of Conservation for the remote new structure, located 2.5km from the Awatere Fault and 35km from the Alpine Fault. A detailed study was undertaken in order to eliminate areas of high hazard risk and to choose the most suitable building site. The bivvy currently houses up to 500 people per year and KGA was delighted to have been part of the facility upgrade.
